Inside Hawkeshead Grammar School

The best value for money in Hawkeshead-- a two pound entry to Hawkeshead Grammar where the curator tells you about 18th century schooling.  Wordsworth's name is carved into the oak benches at various points. The boys were given knives to sharpen their quills and so the carving of names was 'neither encouraged nor discouraged.' They were also given beer during the day (safer than water) and at one point the school housed 90-100 boys.  Young ladies were educated at home.
